Tending The Garden | Marine Eyes, Awakened Souls, James Bernard

  • Arlington Garden 275 Arlington Dr Pasadena, CA 91105 (map)

Month two of Living Earth’s ongoing residency with Arlington Garden! Founded in opposition to the expansion of the 710 Freeway, Arlington is Pasadena’s only dedicated public garden and in 19 years has grown to become a three-acre urban wildlife habitat for Pasadena’s native flora & fauna, an outdoor classroom, and host to the only orange grove along the historic Orange Grove Blvd.

This July we’re gathering underneath their wisteria and olive trees to sit with our beloved ambient family, the Bernard’s. Cynthia and James will be setup in unison, sharing tones and drones both solo and together, from marine eyes, James Bernard, and their collaborative project awakened souls. /

Rescheduled from June

As marine eyes, Cynthia Bernard blends ambient, shoegaze, drone, field recordings & dream pop—writing from a narrative place born in the present moment yet interwoven with lessons from her past. She finds herself regularly lost and found building miniature worlds to explore the healing qualities of sound and cement important moments she has experienced while welcoming stillness in nature. She also curates a monthly mix series called ‘women of ambient’ and headed the mental health benefit compilation ‘Healing Together’ featuring 23 women artists from around the world via Past Inside the Present.

James Bernard is a sound artist and audio engineer whose three decades in music have yielded some of the most notable ambient electronic works of our era, both as a solo artist and across an array of collaborations. He approaches his creations with a unique depth of technological prowess, suffusing every piece with well-crafted texture and rich tonality.

awakened souls is the Los Angeles based ambient music project of veteran electronic music producer, James Bernard and Cynthia Bernard (marine eyes). Since unearthing their love for sculpting meditative soundscapes, they have endlessly found themselves in the creative process. Crafting layers of sound from their bedroom studio using guitars, synthesizers, field recordings, and dreamy vocals, they write songs as a way to center and find peace.
