Emerald Necklace Day with Amigos de los Rios

  • Peck Road Water Conservation Park 5401 Peck Road Arcadia, CA, 91006 United States (map)

Peck Road Water Conservation Park

Huzzah! Rejoice! Just down the street from opening day of the Renaissance Fair it’s our very first gathering with the awe inspiring miracle workers of Amigos de los Rios!

Find us at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia for a day of music, workshops, food, and service work in celebration of Amigos de los Rios’ heroic work of championing the Emerald Necklace greenways project. We’re also bringing our solar powered setup to share music from our friends Dustin Wong & Gregory Uhlmann, Nicolas Maldonado & Susana Pineda, and strangejane.

Bring your bike, skateboard, or roller skates for a group ride along this slice of the Emerald Necklace. Along the way, Amigos de los Rios will be chatting about about their ongoing efforts to develop a 17-mile loop of beautiful parks and greenways to connect 10 cities and nearly 500,000 residents along the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel rivers watershed of East LA County. Amigos de los Rios has been at this project for the past 18 years, have made astonishing progress that’s effected so many lives, and it’s about time we make a day of honoring and highlighting this commitment.

Amigos de los Rios is working to create the Emerald Necklace: a natural infrastructure network of green spaces, green schools, parks, and trails throughout under-served communities in the Los Angeles Basin. Their work is essential in connecting the mountains to the sea, helping to provide equitable access to nature, and protecting our environment and urban communities from the threats of climate change.

Peck Road Water Conservation Park is a stunning 180 acre former alluvial pebble quarry located within a dense area of unincorporated East Los Angeles County. Peck features a sweeping view of the San Gabriel Mountains and double lake that was formed as a shallow spreading basin when the Army Corps channeled the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo Rivers and later deepened by the quarrying process.

This urban site is a microcosm of our LA Basin urban watershed in terms of water resources: stormwater and municipal water supply management, active transportation, access to outdoor recreation opportunities, habitat protection.

Amigos De Los Rios’ Emerald Necklace Group green infrastructure and urban forestry work at Peck provides regional air quality and water resources protection, greenhouse gas reduction, heat island reduction and the benefits of access to nature and regional trails to adjacent schools and residential communities.

This work amplifies Peck Road Water Conservation Park as a place to celebrate the natural and cultural history of our watershed; improved access to physical recreation and sense of place; and opportunities for environmental stewardship and civic engagement.
